Today I’m showing you my second pair of Small Fry Skinny Jeans…well, Roman’s second pair. I first used this pattern here as part of the sew-along of the free 2T pattern. The fit is so perfect I jumped at the chance to join the tour and make Roman a pair in the next size.
I love the name of this pattern! So much so, that I thought it was good enough to embroider on the back pocket. I’m so pleased with how it turned out and also happy that I found a use for the alphabet stitches on my machine. For the front and back pockets, I used the wrong side of the denim as the ‘good’ side. I love patch pockets so put them on the front, but look forward to trying the traditional pockets on another pair…there will be more!
I was so sure I had black topstitching thread, but when I went to sew these I couldn’t find it, so I used regular thread and the triple stitch on the machine. It looks pretty good and is nice and durable.
Just like the first pair, I’m totally smitten with these. The fit is great! This pair turned out to have a bit more of a dropped crotch than my first pair and I suspect that is for a few reasons. 1 – I used the 3T pattern which is to fit over a nappy bum, but this week Roman decided nappies weren’t for him anymore, so they have a little more room in them when he’s got undies on. 2 – I upcycled an old pair of maternity jeans for these and reused the waistband. It’s a bit wider than the one in the pattern, so I think that makes them hang a bit lower.
I spent ages unpicking the belt loops off the old jeans and then totally forgot to put them on…annoying!
If you’ve been following the tour, then you are probably sick of everyone going on about how well the pattern is written but you’re just going to have to keep hearing it! The pattern is detailed, well laid out and walks you through all the steps to make such a professional pair of jeans. This is a pattern for when you want to feel a great sense of achievement, not something to pick up because you need a pair of pants in an hour. They are so worth the effort though. Anyone else wanting this pattern in ladies sizes?!
I also love that this pattern comes with a copy shop large scale version so you can get it printed and not have to tape all the pages together! I wish more designers would do this! The pattern also has layers which enable you to print out only the size/s you need. So clever!
